Term 1 - Week 6

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

An awesome effort to all students who competed in the district swimming event last Friday. We have a number of students who will be participating at the Division level of the competition in Broadmeadows today. Good luck!

Thank you to our P&F volunteers for running Zooper Dooper days this week. It was definitely the right weather to cool down with icy poles!

Staffing Update

I would like to welcome Mr Jake Francis to our leadership team. Jake will be starting on next Friday in the role of Leading Teacher of student engagement and management at the Ambrosia campus.

I would also like to welcome Mrs Claire Brown, who has joined the Grade 6 team of teachers. Mrs Brown will be co-teaching grade 6E alongside Mr Kimpton.

NAPLAN Assessments

Our grade 3 and 5 students will be undertaking the online NAPLAN Literacy and Numeracy assessments starting from next Wednesday morning. The students have been undertaking preparation in class understanding how to read and respond to the different questions and also how to use the devices.

School Photo Day

Next Friday March 13th we have MSP Photography attending both campuses to take all student and staff photographs. Please ensure you have read all the information sent out in the Compass notifications.

Acting Principal

I would also like to inform our school community that I will be taking on the role of Acting Senior Education Improvement Leader for our Network of schools for the next eight weeks. During my absence from Beveridge PS, Silvia Menelaou will be Acting Principal. I am confident that Silvia and the leadership team will continue to work collaboratively to ensure consistency and stability for our students, staff and community. Additionally, I remain committed to supporting our school and will ensure that I stay connected.

Enjoy your long weekend! See you all back on Tuesday of next week.

Harmony Day School Picnic

Join us for our Harmony Day Community Picnic on March 20th as we celebrate diversity, inclusion and belonging within our wonderful school community. Families are invited to bring a picnic OR enjoy the food trucks provided as we come together to recognise that “Everyone Belongs.”

Students will participate in activities throughout the day celebrating culture, identity and respect. Our after-school celebration from 4–6pm will be a special opportunity for families to come together, connect and share in the festivities. There will be “come and try” sessions featuring dance and singing from a range of cultures, followed by a number of performances to conclude the evening.

We look forward to seeing our community united in orange, or in your traditional cultural dress as we celebrate the rich and diverse cultures that make our school so special.

Foundation

We have had a busy and productive couple of weeks in Foundation! This week marks our first week of ALL students at school full time! No more Wednesday sleep-ins- but were they ever??

English- Students have been learning and consolidating the letters and sounds for a, i, m, s, t, n, o and p. We have been practising recognising these letters, saying the most common sound they represent, and forming them correctly when writing. We have also begun using these letters and sounds to write vc (vowel-consonant) and cvc (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.

We have continued to look at the parts of a book including the front cover, title, author and illustrator. We have used the pictures in books to ‘guess’ what we think is happening in the book before reading it.

Mathematics- In Maths, we have been matching numerals to collections from 0–5. Students have been using pictures, counters and five-frames to help develop their understanding of number and quantity. This week we are looking at the concepts of more and less and introducing all kinds of patterns (movement, object, colour, number, etc.).

Wellbeing- We have introduced the Zones of Regulation, supporting students to recognise different emotions and understand strategies to help regulate their feelings throughout the day.

Inquiry- In Inquiry, we are exploring the topic Who is in your family? Students have been sharing and discussing the important people in their lives.

Library- All classes have now visited the Library and the students have been excited to take one of the wonderful books home to share with their families

Reading Eggs/Mathseeds- All classes should have received their Reading Eggs logins and passwords. This is a great program to support what we are learning in the classroom. Our first certificates were handed out to hard-working students this week.

Looking forward to another fun and productive week,

Arrowsmith PE

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Our Foundation students have enthusiastically begun their new Catching Unit in Physical Education, and it has been wonderful to see their excitement and growing confidence already!

To support students as they build these skills, we are using specialised equipment such as catching pouches (as seen in the photos). These pouches help slow the movement of the ball and make catching more achievable, allowing students to experience early success while developing their coordination.

We look forward to seeing their skills continue to grow throughout the unit.

Grade 3

The Year 3 students have been busy designing and planning their own creative stories and are now at the exciting stage of publishing their work. They have shown great imagination and effort throughout the process and are all very proud of their finished pieces. In Mathematics, students have been actively engaging in lessons and have shown a growing interest in adding numbers with regrouping. During Inquiry, students explored the Australian flag and labelled it with examples of native flora and fauna. In Wellbeing, the cohort have been learning to identify both positive and negative emotions and have been practising checking in with one another to support a caring classroom environment.

Grade 5

This week in Grade 5, students have been strengthening their writing by learning how to edit paragraphs. They are focusing on adding more detail to make their ideas clearer and more engaging, as well as identifying and fixing sentence fragments to improve the flow of their writing. In Mathematics, students are practising how to solve word problems using the CUBES strategy. This approach helps them carefully read problems, identify key information and decide which operations to use. Students are also continuing to practise their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills to support their problem-solving. In Inquiry, we have been exploring how introduced species brought by Europeans have impacted Australia’s environment. Students are also learning about migration and discussing the different reasons people came to Australia, helping them develop a deeper understanding of Australia’s history and how communities have changed over time. In Art, our Year 5 students followed a directed drawing experience to create a treehouse design. They are using their imagination and artistic expertise to turn it into a masterpiece full of interesting things to see and do. Looking forward to some great results from the students.

Ambrosia STEM

This term in STEM, the Grade 6 students have been exploring cyber safety. They examined the balance between online and offline activities, considering the potential consequences of spending excessive time in digital spaces. Students investigated the impact of cyberbullying and discussed practical strategies to support those affected, as well as ways to help prevent it by contributing to a positive and respectful online environment. They developed SMART goals to guide responsible decision making when online and will continue building their awareness and safety skills throughout the year. In addition, students have begun learning to code their own programs and games using block based programming in Scratch.
