Term 1 - Week 7

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend and that you were able to have some much deserved down time.

As communicated to the school community last week, I will be taking on the role of Acting Principal for the next eight weeks while Christine Cole is Acting Senior Education Improvement Leader for our Network of schools. While continuing in my role as Campus Principal also, I look forward to supporting the school in this capacity and continuing the strong work already taking place across our community.

I am grateful for the ongoing support from our students, staff and families and look forward to working together to ensure a positive and productive learning environment for all.

NAPLAN Assessments

As you may have been made aware in the media, NAPLAN testing was impacted on Wednesday morning by technical issues with the national assessment platform. ACARA, the national body that oversees testing, has confirmed that testing resumed shortly after the initial incident. ACARA recognises the significant impact to students disrupted during their NAPLAN writing assessments this morning, and for that they apologise unreservedly. Schools have been informed to continue NAPLAN testing as per their planned test schedules. ACARA will continue to work closely with states and territories to support students to complete their NAPLAN tests. Measures are in place to ensure students are not disadvantaged as a result of this technical issue. Should parents and carers have any further queries about the NAPLAN disruptions this morning, they should contact their child’s school in the first instance.

Fortunately, we did not encounter these technical issues on Wednesday and our grade 3 and 5 students were able to begin their online NAPLAN Literacy and Numeracy assessments without any hiccups. All students participating have put in an amazing effort. Well done! The assessments will continue into next week, along with catch up tests for any students who may have been absent.

Harmony Day Friday 20th March

We are very excited about our upcoming event Harmony Day Community Picnic. Next Friday we celebrate diversity, inclusion and belonging within our wonderful school community. Families are invited to bring a picnic or enjoy the food trucks provided as we come together to recognise that “Everyone Belongs.” We look forward to seeing our community united in orange or dressed in traditional cultural clothing as we celebrate the rich and diverse cultures that make our school so special.

Students will take part in activities throughout the school day that celebrate culture, identity and respect. Our after-school celebration from 4–6pm will be a special opportunity for families to connect, share and enjoy the festivities together. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Ramadan

Over the coming weeks, many members of our school community will be observing Ramadan, an important and sacred time in the Islamic calendar. Ramadan is a period of reflection, prayer, generosity and community for Muslims around the world.

During this month, many Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, which means they do not eat or drink during daylight hours. It is also a time focused on kindness, helping others, gratitude and strengthening connections with family and community.

At our school, we value and celebrate the diversity of our community. We acknowledge the significance of Ramadan for our Muslim students and families and wish those observing this special time Ramadan Mubarak.

Easter Celebrations

The end of term 1 is going to be here very shortly, which means we have the following happening over the next three weeks: Bakers Delight Hot Cross Bun fundraiser, Easter hamper raffle and our Junior campus Easter bonnet parade. Please make sure you read through the Compass notifications for further details.

Yours sincerely,

Silvia Menelaou

Acting Principal

Division Swimming

Division Swimming

On the 5th of March, eight students earned the opportunity to represent the Mitchell District at the Whittlesea Division Swimming Championships. After a mad rush to make sure everyone was in the right place at the right time, all eight of our swimmers hit the water in the first event of the day — the 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay. This year, the tough decision was made to combine our 11-year-old and 12/13-year-old swimmers to give the team the best chance. Eleven-year-olds Risha and Raya stepped up to take on a crucial role, racing against competitors up to 18 months older than them. After the 4x100, the same four girls returned to the water for the Open Age Medley Relay. It was a huge effort from the team, especially with the freestyle and medley relays scheduled so close together. Their determination paid off with strong finishes of 4th and 6th respectively for the Girls and 4th for the Boys.

Attention then turned to the individual events. It was a big day in the pool, with two of our girls competing in four races across the day. One of the highlights came in the 11-year-old Breaststroke, where Raya secured a well-earned third-place ribbon in a nail-biting finish, with the touch on the wall deciding the result.

Our swimmers gave it their all, racing against the best competitors from surrounding districts. The standard of competition throughout the day was extremely high, with some fantastic swimming on display. The school would like to commend and celebrate all the families for supporting and celebrating their child's achievement in qualifying for and competing in the Division Swimming Competition.

This brings us to the end of the competitive swimming pathways for 2026 and we are hoping to see a number of students return to the pool in their Swimming and Water safety lessons later in the year.

Harmony Day

Join us for our Harmony Day Community Picnic as we celebrate diversity, inclusion and belonging within our wonderful school community. Families are invited to bring a picnic or enjoy the food trucks provided as we come together to recognise that “Everyone Belongs.”

Students will take part in activities throughout the school day that celebrate culture, identity and respect. Our after-school celebration from 4–6pm will be a special opportunity for families to connect, share and enjoy the festivities together.

There will be “come and try” sessions featuring dance and singing from a range of cultures, followed by a number of performances to conclude the evening.

We look forward to seeing our community united in orange or dressed in traditional cultural clothing as we celebrate the rich and diverse cultures that make our school so special.

Grade 1

The Year 1 students are beginning to improve their Digitech skills. They have been learning about being safe online through the E-safety online learning program. They have also been learning how to use programs such as ‘Animal Typing’ and ‘Pip and Tim’ to improve their reading and typing skills. Later in the year, students will learn how to do programming in ‘Scratch” and using the Beebots.

Art at Arrowsmith

Our Grade One students have been exploring the unique art style of Pablo Picasso. They looked at Picasso’s famous “two faces” portraits and noticed how he used different viewpoints in one picture. Students experimented with drawing faces that show both the front and side at the same time, just like Picasso did. They also created imaginative animals inspired by his bold lines and shapes.  It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they explored this playful style of art. We certainly have had a lot of fun with these artworks to start our year.

Grade 4 Newsletter

Dear Grade, 4 Families and Carers,

It has been another busy and exciting time in the Grade 4 cohort! Our students have been working hard, building friendships, and getting involved in many learning opportunities. We are very proud of the effort and enthusiasm students bring to school each day. Below are a few updates and reminders from the Grade 4 team.

Brochure Project

In English, students have been researching Macquarie Island and creating informative brochures. Through this project, students are learning about the island’s history, wildlife, and environmental challenges while developing their research, writing, and presentation skills. It has been fantastic to see the creativity and effort students are putting into their work.

Maths Learning

In Maths, students have been focusing on key concepts including place value, addition, subtraction, decimals, and time. These topics help students strengthen their number understanding and develop strategies to solve problems with confidence.

District Swimming

Congratulations to the following students who proudly represented our school at the District Swimming Carnival. We are very proud of their effort and sportsmanship.

4B: Daniel B, Hayley H, Kelsey L

Excitement is building for our Grade 4 Camp at Billabong Ranch Camp, taking place Wednesday 29 April – Friday 1 May 2026 (Term 2). Camp is always a highlight of the year and provides students with opportunities to build independence, strengthen friendships, and take part in many fun outdoor activities. More information will be shared closer to the date.

Art at Ambrosia

Our Year 5 students followed a directed drawing experience to create a treehouse design. They are using their imagination and artistic expertise to turn it into a masterpiece full of interesting things to see and do. Looking forward to some great results from the students.
