Term 1 - Week 10

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

As we reach the end of Term 1, I would like to thank all our students, staff, and families for a wonderful start to the year. It’s been a term full of learning, growth, and new experiences, and we couldn’t be prouder of the progress everyone has made.

Term 2

A reminder that school begins back in term 2 on Tuesday April 21st. On Monday there is a Curriculum Day. Our staff will be engaging in professional learning through the Berry Street Education Model, which focuses on supporting students’ wellbeing, emotional regulation, and readiness to learn. This approach helps teachers build strong, positive relationships with students and equips them with practical strategies to support behaviour, engagement, and resilience in the classroom. By strengthening these areas, we are continuing to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.

End of Day Pick-Up Arrangements – Important Reminder

We would like to remind all families about the importance of clear and consistent end-of-day pick-up arrangements for all students.

Recently, we have noticed an increase in situations where students are leaving school with different friends or family members without the school being informed. While we understand and value the strong sense of community and support among our families, this can create challenges in ensuring all students are safe and accounted for at the end of the day.

There have been occasions where children have been collected by another trusted adult or family friend, however this has not been communicated to the school or the child’s classroom teacher. This has resulted in situations where families arrive to collect their child and we are unable to confirm where the child has gone, leading to unnecessary concern and time spent locating students.

To ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students, we ask that families please:

  • Inform the school or classroom teacher in advance if your child will be going home with someone different
  • Ensure your child knows exactly who is picking them up each day
  • Avoid changing pick-up arrangements without clear communication
  • Encourage your child to check with their teacher before leaving if there is any change

Our priority is to ensure that every child leaves school safely and that we can confidently account for all students at the end of the day.

We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a safe and well-organised dismissal process for all students.

Anzac Day Commemoration

On Thursday 24th April, we have a group of 4 grade 6 students who are going to be hosting the school ANZAC commemorative ceremonies at both campuses. As part of the ceremony we are asking that all students make a poppy to be held up towards the end of the ceremony for a campus photo

We also have 4 student leaders, and a staff member, attending the ANZAC Dawn Service Mandalay Club on Friday 25th April. The students will be laying a wreath at the ceremony on behalf of the school.

Foundation Enrolments 2027 - Open Tuesday April 21st.

We would like to inform families that enrolments for Foundation (Prep) 2027 will open from the beginning of Term 2 (Tuesday 21st April 2026). This year, the Department of Education is introducing a new online enrolment process called Student Insight, which allows families to submit enrolment applications digitally rather than using paper forms.

This new system is designed to make the enrolment process simpler and more efficient for families. Further information, including how to apply and access the online portal, will be shared early next term. We encourage families with children starting school in 2027 to keep an eye out for updates and important dates.

I would like to wish all of our families a happy and safe Easter. For those who celebrate, we hope this time is filled with joy, rest, and special moments with family and friends. I look forward to seeing you back next term for more exciting learning adventures!

Yours Sincerely,

Silvia Menelaou

Acting Principal

Cyber-Safety Parent Seminar

Dear Families,

On Monday the 30th March we hosted, once again, a Cyber-Safety Presentation run by a volunteer, Tim, from the Australian Federal Police. Topics discussed were specifically aimed at educating and increasing awareness about online child sexual exploitation including avoiding inappropriate contact, online grooming, self-generated content, sexual extortion and how to get help.

As parents and carers, you play an important role in protecting your child from harm. This presentation aimed to support parents and carers in preventing and managing safety challenges that your child may face, as well as guiding your child to understand these and feel empowered to take action.

Tim provided us with some fact sheets that may help our families have those difficult conversations with your children and to also help answer some important questions you may have yourself. Please read the fact sheets below.

Information about Social media platforms on notice

Message from the eSafety Commissioner: https://vimeo.com/1177540725?fl=pl&fe=sh

From mid-December, eSafety has been monitoring age-restricted platforms to assess how they are complying with their obligations to prevent under-16s from having accounts. It is clear the restrictions are already having an impact. Based on information gathered through legally enforceable notices, many platforms have removed, deactivated or restricted a large number of under‑age accounts.

However, based on the information gathered, including through submissions from the public, field research with parents and carers and engagement with key stakeholders, children under 16 continue to retain accounts, create new ones, or pass platforms’ age checks.

Because of these concerns, eSafety is now focusing its investigations on five major platforms - Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube. These platforms have been notified about our concerns and expectations for improvement and warned eSafety will take enforcement action if they fail to take reasonable steps to prevent systemic failures that allow children under 16 from having accounts on their service.

Major reforms like this take time – not just to embed, but to spark a broader cultural shift in how industry designs services to keep children safer online.  It won’t happen overnight, and although we can see some progress has been made, it's clear there's still a way to go.

This update explains what eSafety has learned so far since the legislation took effect on 10 December 2025. We will continue to provide transparency where we can while protecting the integrity of our ongoing regulatory processes and provide relevant up-to-date information for the community, including children and young people, parents and carers and educators at our social media age restrictions hub. eSafety remains committed to holding platforms accountable, and ensuring these restrictions deliver real change for Australian families.

Wellbeing Newsletter

Dear Families,

Please see our Wellbeing newsletter below!

Brainstorm Productions

On Thursday 26th March, Brainstorm Productions presented their student wellbeing performance ‘The Protectors’ for all students in Grades 2 to 6 at Ambrosia Campus. The performance follows the story of Leo and Serena, who are struggling to get along with their peers. When Leo and Serena enter ‘Protector School’ they discover that empathy, assertiveness and respect are their real superpowers. They learn how to build resilience and positive connections at school, at home and online.

‘The Protectors’ is a live theatre experience, developed by educators and a clinical psychologist.

The performance is aligned with key outcomes from the curriculum, as well as current research and recommendations from expert organisations such as the eSafety Commissioner. The show is designed to spark conversations about bullying, cyber safety and wellbeing among our students.

Brainstorm Productions is one of Australia’s most experienced and respected theatre in education companies, performing to over 260,000 students every year. Brainstorm Productions are endorsed by the eSafety Commissioner as a Trusted eSafety Provider and listed as an evidence-based bullying prevention program on the Victorian Schools Mental Health Menu. Foundation

We have had a busy week in Foundation and are all looking forward to a well-deserved break! We are so proud of the way the students have settled into their school life and are seeing great progress in their skills already!

English
In English, we have been learning the sounds that letters make and practising how to correctly form them when writing. This week we have focused on the letters b, c, g and h. Students have been listening for these sounds in words and practising writing the letters the correct way.

We have also been working on reading fluency by reading with a partner and practising reading smoothly. Students have been building their vocabulary, using the pictures in books to help “guess” what might be happening, and asking and answering questions about the stories we read together.

Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about patterns. Students have explored two-part and three-part patterns using movement, colours and objects. We have also been working on partitioning numbers, which means breaking numbers up into different parts, focusing on numbers up to 5.

Wellbeing
In Wellbeing, we have continued learning about the Zones of Regulation. Students have been practising identifying the different zones and noticing them in books and videos we watch together.

Inquiry
In Inquiry, we have been learning about families. We have been discussing how families can be different, where families live, and some of the celebrations families take part in.

We hope you all enjoy a wonderful break and look forward to seeing the students back next term!

Kind regards,

The Foundation Team

Grade 4

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a fantastic start to the year it has been in Grade 4! We are incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm, and positive attitude shown by all students throughout Term 1. It has been wonderful to see students settling into their classrooms, building friendships, and developing their learning habits.

Learning Highlights

English

This term, students have been exploring comprehension strategies through our class novel Kensuke’s Kingdom. They have been practising making inferences, identifying key information, and supporting their ideas with evidence from the text. Students have also begun developing their persuasive writing skills, focusing on expressing opinions and using strong reasons to support their arguments.

Mathematics

In Maths, students have been working on:

  • Place value (ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands)
  • Addition and subtraction strategies
  • Decimals
  • Time (including o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to)
  • Fractions, including identifying, representing, and finding fractions of collections

It has been great to see students building confidence and applying these skills in different ways.

Celebrations

A big congratulations to all Grade 4 students for their efforts this term. It has been especially pleasing to see:

  • Improved behaviour and focus during learning time
  • Positive teamwork and support for one another
  • Growing confidence across all learning areas

A special congratulations to 4C for receiving the attendance award this term—what a fantastic achievement! It is wonderful to see such consistent effort in getting to school on time and ready to learn.

We would also like to acknowledge the efforts of our girls’ basketball incursion, who have represented the school with great sportsmanship, teamwork, and determination. You should be very proud of your efforts both on and off the court!

We would also like to thank families for your ongoing support—it makes a big difference!

Looking Ahead – Term 2

We are very excited for our upcoming Billabong Ranch Camp, taking place from Wednesday 29th April to Friday 1st May. This will be a fantastic opportunity for students to build independence, confidence, and strengthen friendships through a range of fun and engaging activities.

More information and final reminders will be shared early next term. Hope everyone keeps practising rolling up there sleeping bags.

Final Message

Thank you again for a wonderful Term 1. We hope everyone has a safe and relaxing break and we look forward to seeing you all refreshed and ready for Term 2!

Kind regards,
The Grade 4 Team

Grade 5

Year 5 newsletter

Students engaged in a Harmony Day colouring activity, where they explored the importance of inclusiveness, respect, and celebrating cultural diversity. Through class discussions, students reflected on how we can show kindness, acceptance, and understanding towards others in our school community, linking closely to our school values.

We also spent time focusing on wellbeing and cyber safety. Students participated in activities and discussions about how to stay safe online, make responsible choices when using technology, and recognise how their actions can impact others. This learning supports students in developing safe and respectful behaviours both in and outside the classroom.

In Literacy, students have begun planning and writing their own narrative texts. This work is closely connected to our Inquiry unit on History, where students are creating a historical character based on Beveridge’s past. They are learning to develop characters, settings, and story structure, while also building their understanding of local history and how stories can reflect life in different time periods.

Term 1 Specialist Wrap-up @ Arrowsmith

AUSLAN - A big thank you to the students who supported our Auslan workshop during the Harmony Day celebrations. They did a wonderful job teaching members of our community a few Auslan signs and helping them learn the chorus of I Am Australian. It was truly special to see so many of our students confidently singing and signing along for the finale—such a proud and inclusive moment for our school community.

PERFORMING ARTS
At Arrowsmith the students spent their last week of term having the opportunity to learn about and play the Xylophones. They learnt the song “Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star”.

PE
Our Foundation and Grade One students last week  had a fantastic time participating in a Footy Clinic at school. The session was full of energy, excitement, and plenty of smiles as students were introduced to the basic skills of Australian Rules Football.

Throughout the clinic, the students practised important footy skills such as kicking, handballing and marking. The coaches ran a variety of fun and engaging games that helped students build confidence while learning how to control the ball and work as part of a team.

One of the highlights of the clinic was seeing students encourage each other and celebrate their successes, whether it was a great kick, a strong mark, or simply having a go at something new. The activities were designed to suit all ability levels, ensuring every student could participate and enjoy the experience.

Programs like this are a wonderful opportunity for our students to stay active while developing important physical and social skills. Through the clinic, students improved their coordination, balance, and teamwork, while also learning about sportsmanship and the importance of trying their best.

Most importantly, the lessons were all about having fun and developing a love of movement and sport. It was fantastic to see so many happy and enthusiastic faces!

We would like to thank the visiting coaches for delivering such an engaging session and giving our students a memorable introduction to footy.
