Term 2 - Week 1

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

Welcome to Term 2! I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new students and their families.

I hope everyone had a lovely break over the Easter holidays. Many of our students have shared their holiday experiences with us.  They have travelled locally, interstate and some lucky students have been overseas. The students have settled well back into the school routine and were pleased to see their teachers and friends.

Anzac Day Commemoration

Some selected year 6 students will be leading our commemorative ceremonies at both campuses tomorrow. Some of our students will also represent the school at the dawn service Saturday morning being held at the Mandalay Club.

Grade 4 Camp to Echuca

Next Wednesday to Friday our Grade 4 students and staff will be enjoying three days of fun and adventure at Billabong Ranch in Echuca. We all hope that you have a wonderful memorable experience.

E-Scooter Safety Reminder

I would like to remind families that under Victorian law, e-scooters are not permitted to be used by children under 16 years of age. As a result, students are not allowed to ride e-scooters to and from school.

I also ask families to ensure that all children riding bikes or scooters to school are wearing a helmet at all times, as this is a legal requirement and an important safety measure (with exemptions for certain religious headwear).

Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe.

Social Media and Online Safety Reminder

We would like to remind families that many popular social media platforms, including apps such as Snapchat, are not designed for primary school-aged children.

Under Australian law, social media platforms are required to prevent children under 16 from having accounts. While this places responsibility on the platforms, it reinforces that these apps are not appropriate for younger users.

At school, we are increasingly seeing the impact of social media use on student wellbeing, friendships, and behaviour. Issues such as inappropriate messaging, conflict between peers, and exposure to unsuitable content can quickly carry over into the school environment and affect learning.

We strongly encourage families to:

  • Monitor their child’s use of social media and online apps
  • Be aware of age restrictions and platform guidelines
  • Have open conversations about safe and respectful online behaviour
  • Delay access to social media where possible

Working together, we can support our students to develop safe and responsible digital habits.

Yours sincerely,

Silvia Menelaou

Acting Principal

Attendance Matters

When your child misses school, they miss important opportunities to...

GRADE1

The grade one students will be participating in a series of skill stations this term, each designed to target a specific aspect of ball control and coordination. These rotations will include activities such as partner passing, target throwing, dribbling with hands and feet, and rolling balls to hit targets. This allows students to practise skills in smaller groups, ensuring more opportunities for active participation and personalised support.

The rotations will also help students develop independence and confidence as they learn to follow instructions and move between activities.

GRADE 6

Welcome back to Term 2. We are looking forward to another exciting term of learning and new opportunities for our Grade 6 students.

This term, our fundraising will continue with a new range of items, including cookies and killer pythons. We thank students for their continued enthusiasm and support as they continue to develop their leadership, responsibility and teamwork skills through these fundraising opportunities.

In Mathematics, students will be solving problems involving the addition and subtraction of fractions using their knowledge of equivalent fractions. They will also be investigating angle relationships, including angles on a straight line, angles at a point and vertically opposite angles. Students will use this knowledge to determine unknown angles and explain their mathematical reasoning.

In English, students have begun a poetry unit based on the Disaster series by Jackie French, particularly focusing on Fire and Cyclone. Throughout the unit, students will develop their sentence construction skills by writing compound and complex sentences using conjunctions such as because, but and so. They will also practise combining ideas using subordinating conjunctions and begin generating ideas for their own rhyming couplet poems.

In Inquiry, students will be exploring how living things survive in their environments. They will investigate the structural features and adaptations of plants and animals, and analyse how internal and external features support survival, growth, behaviour and reproduction.

This term in Grade 6 Sport, students will be focusing on the game of rounders over the coming weeks. They will build their skills, teamwork and game strategies in preparation for the upcoming Gala Day.

AUSLAN

This week in Auslan at the Ambrosia campus, students have been learning signs related to ANZAC Day.
Grade 2s watched an Auslan version of the popular book ANZAC Ted and Grade 3s, 4s and 5s have been adding to their Auslan Dictionaries.
Grades 3-5 have also begun the initial rounds of the first ever Beveridge Primary School Auslan Spelling Bee! We’re looking forward to an exciting and interesting term.
