Term 2 - Week 7

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

A huge thank you to our amazing Parents & Friends Committee for volunteering their time to run our fundraising BBQ at Craigieburn Bunnings last Sunday. Events like these require a great deal of planning, organisation, and commitment, and we are incredibly grateful for the dedication of our volunteers who generously gave up their weekend to support our school community.

Young Leaders excursion

On Monday, our Student Leaders attended the Young Leaders Excursion, joining student leaders from schools across our network. Throughout the day, students participated in a range of engaging activities focused on developing their leadership skills, teamwork, communication, and collaboration.

Government Schools Principal Conference

Last Thursday and Friday, the Principal Team had the opportunity to attend the Government Schools Principal Conference at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. This annual event brings together principals from across Victoria to learn from renowned educators and leading practitioners, explore innovative approaches to leadership, and engage in professional networking.

The conference provided valuable insights and inspiration, reinforcing the important role school leaders play in supporting student success and staff development. We returned feeling energised, motivated, and grateful for the opportunity to lead and serve the Beveridge Primary School community.

Foundation 2027 School Tour

We are excited to welcome prospective Foundation families to our next school tour of the Junior Campus, which will be held next Tuesday at 9:30am. School tours provide families with the opportunity to explore our learning spaces, meet members of our leadership team, and learn more about the programs and opportunities available at our school.

If you know of any families considering enrolment for Foundation 2027, we encourage them to register and join us for a tour. We look forward to showcasing our wonderful school community.

Take care and enjoy your long weekend.

Christine

Principal

District and Division Cross Country

District Cross Country Success

On 29 May, a group of students represented our school at the District Cross Country Championships. The challenging course at Broadford tested every runner's stamina, featuring steep hills, muddy tracks, puddles of rainwater, and plenty of twists and turns.

Students competed in age and gender divisions, including the 9/10-year-olds, 11-year-olds, and 12/13-year-olds. The 9/10-year-olds completed a 2km course, while the 11 and 12/13-year-olds tackled a demanding 3km run.

Congratulations to all of our runners who participated in this event. The Broadford course was a true test of determination and resilience, but our students showed outstanding perseverance and school spirit throughout the day.

A special congratulations goes to the students listed, who have qualified for the Division Cross Country Championships in Kilmore on the 4th June. We wish them the very best of luck as they continue their cross-country journey.

This sports report was proudly written and compiled by Year 6 students Imogen M and Alicia H. We wanted to make sure all the amazing achievements of our cross-country runners were celebrated in this week's newsletter. Thank you to everyone who supported and cheered on the team and well done again to all competitors on a fantastic effort.

Division Cross Country

Today our students braved the wild winter weather at the Trackside venue at the Kilmore Racing Club today, representing Beveridge Primary School with determination, resilience and outstanding sportsmanship. Despite the challenging conditions, all students gave their best effort on a demanding course. Congratulations to JJ, Nyah and Jack, who each finished in an impressive 9th place, earning qualification for the Regional Cross Country Championships to be held on 18 June. A special mention also goes to Amelia, Evianna, Allegra and Ryan, who achieved strong results, finishing top 30th in highly competitive fields.

Beyond the results, our students demonstrated the values that make us proud. Throughout the day, Beveridge students could be heard encouraging and cheering on their teammates as they approached the finish line, showing excellent sportsmanship and support for one another. Congratulations to all competitors on their efforts and the way they represented our school.

Wellbeing Weekly News

Grade 1

This term as part of our Inquiry unit, students have been learning how science is used as part of everyday life. Using materials such as boxes, cups, straws, rice, lentils and elastic bands, we designed and made a variety of musical instruments. We created guitars, drums and maracas, and then reflected on what was tricky to construct, what changes we would make next time and the materials we used.

In Writing students have been starting to write recounts about stories they have read, such as “Jabari Jumps” using words such as “next”, “then” and “after” to help sequence their writing.

Students in Foundation and Year 1 took part in the National Simultaneous Storytime last week. Over 2 million students across Australia joined in to either watch “Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller” be streamed live, or read the story in class. Students then participated in learning tasks relating to the book.

Grade 2

It has been a busy and exciting few weeks in Year 2!

In Writing, students have been learning about procedural texts and exploring the features that help us write clear instructions. As part of our learning, students have had the opportunity to write their own recipes and then put them into action through a range of hands-on cooking activities.

Students enjoyed making vegemite sandwiches, fairy bread, mini pizzas and chocolate balls. This gave students a real-life purpose for following and creating procedural texts. These experiences were not only lots of fun but also helped students understand the importance of sequencing, using precise language and following instructions carefully.

We were also delighted by the wonderful turnout for Special Persons Day. It was fantastic to welcome so many special people into our classroom. Students loved showing their visitors around, sharing their learning, playing games and participating in special activities together. It was a memorable time filled with smiles, laughter and meaningful connections.

We are very proud of all the hard work and enthusiasm our Year 2 students have shown this term and look forward to more exciting learning experiences ahead!

Grade 6

Grade 6 Fundraising

Our Grade 6 fundraising initiative has continued successfully, with students selling cookies and snake lollies to members of the school community. Throughout the fundraiser, students have consistently demonstrated responsibility, reliability and strong leadership skills while managing sales and supporting the organisation of the program. It has been fantastic to see the cohort represent the school in such a positive and mature manner.

English

In English, students have continued engaging with our class novel, The Last Bear, through discussions, comprehension activities and written responses. Students have also completed both narrative and persuasive cold writing tasks to demonstrate their independent writing skills and identify areas for future growth. Throughout the term, students have been exploring the language features and persuasive devices commonly used to influence and persuade a reader, while beginning to apply these techniques within their own writing.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of area and perimeter by using formulas to calculate the area of rectangles and applying these skills to solve problems involving composite shapes. Students also investigated how rectangles can have the same area but different perimeters. In addition, students have been learning about Cartesian planes, including reading coordinates and transforming shapes through translations and reflections on a grid.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students explored how changing physical conditions within environments can affect the growth and survival of plants. Students also participated in a fungi investigation where they developed a hypothesis, followed an experimental procedure, recorded observations and formed conclusions based on the evidence gathered. Through this experiment, students investigated how mould grows on bread when exposed to particular environmental conditions.

Arrowsmith Music/Performing Arts

Students have been continuing to practise their song in preparation for the school concert next Term. They have started adding actions to their performance to make it more engaging, focussing on facial expressions and bringing a lot of energy to the stage.

Ambrosia STEM

This term in STEM, the Grade 6 students have been working through a series of coding challenges using Scratch. Scratch is an online, block-based programming platform that helps students develop fundamental algorithmic thinking and coding skills, providing a strong foundation for future studies and careers in computer science.

Throughout the term, students have designed and programmed games such as Flappy Bird and Maze Runner, while also incorporating their own creative ideas and personal styles into their projects.

Our Special Person Day was a highly engaging experience, giving students the opportunity to work alongside a special guest to strengthen their understanding of coding concepts and further develop their games. It was wonderful to see students confidently sharing their learning, collaborating with others, and showcasing their creativity and problem-solving skills.
