Term 4 - Week 2

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

What a busy and exciting second week of Term 4 we have had at BPS! It has been wonderful to see our students settling back into their learning routines and making the most of the many opportunities on offer across both campuses.

Sporting Events

This week has been another big week for sport at BPS! On Wednesday, students represented our school at the Regional Athletics Competition, while on Thursday our Grade 6 Girls Basketball Team competed at the next level of competition. Congratulations to all students involved for their fantastic efforts, teamwork and sportsmanship. We are very proud of you!

Grade 3 & 4 Skateboarding Incursion

This Thursday and Friday, our Grade 3 and 4 students began their skateboarding sessions with Gnarly Neighbours. This exciting program will run over the next four weeks, providing students with an opportunity to develop their balance, coordination, confidence and resilience while learning new skills. Best of all, the program is free of charge for all families! We hope our students thoroughly enjoy this fantastic experience.

Principal Network Conference

On Thursday and Friday, our Principal Team is attending the Network Principal Conference, with a focus on developing leadership skills and strengthening school leadership practices. Opportunities like these allow us to collaborate with other school leaders, share ideas and bring new learning back to BPS to support our continued school improvement.

Grade 2 & 3 Disco

Next Wednesday evening, our Grade 2 and 3 students will have their much-anticipated school disco! We are looking forward to a fantastic evening filled with music, dancing and plenty of fun. I'm sure there will be some impressive dance moves on display!

2026 Parent Opinion Survey

A big thank you to all the families who took the time to complete the 2026 Parent Opinion Survey. Your feedback is incredibly valuable and helps us celebrate what we are doing well while identifying opportunities to further improve our school. Once we receive the survey results, we will share a summary of the findings with our school community through the newsletter.

Campus Assemblies

Our first campus assemblies for Term 4 will take place next Monday.

  • Ambrosia Campus: Monday at 9:10am
  • Arrowsmith Campus: Monday at 2:40pm

We look forward to seeing many of our families there!

Take care,

Christine Cole

Regional Athletics

We are incredibly proud of the 11 students who represented Beveridge Primary School at the Northern Metropolitan Region Track and Field Championships on 14 October.

A huge congratulations to Nyah L and Manvir S for their outstanding performances in the 200m events for their respective age groups. An exceptional 1st-place finish by Manvir has earned him an invitation to compete at the School Sport Victoria State Track and Field Championships later this term. What a fantastic achievement!

This event marks the conclusion of our official School Sport Victoria journey for 2026 and the final SSV event for our graduating Year 6 students.

Thank you to all of our students for the effort, commitment, and sportsmanship you have shown throughout the year. You have represented our school with pride, and we wish our graduating students every success as they continue into the secondary school sporting pathways and opportunities that lie ahead. This has been one of the most successful and well-participated years of interschool and regional-level competition in Beveridge Primary School's history.

For those students returning to Beveridge Primary School next year, we look forward to seeing what you can achieve on the field, court, and track in 2027 and beyond. We know there are many exciting opportunities ahead, and we can't wait to see you continue to challenge yourselves, represent our school with pride, and strive for your personal best.

Congratulations to all of our 2026 representatives on a fantastic year of School Sport Victoria competition.

Reminders

Hats

All students are expected to wear a broad brimmed hat EVERY RECESS AND LUNCH TIME to keep them Sun Smart. At Beveridge Primary School, students will be asked to play under a covered area if they do not have a hat. Please label your child’s hat with their name and make sure that they keep it in their school bag.

Home Reading

Students in Year 1 are expected to read their ‘Read to Me’ text every night. Parents are asked to read to or with their child every night, using the 5 other books in their home reading folder. Every student has been allocated a day to swap their home reading books. Please make sure that your child is completing their reading and then returning their books on their day. Parents are also asked to record when students have read in the small yellow reading log book.

Tiddalik Performance

The Drama Toolbox will be presenting an interactive performance about the Dreamtime story ‘Tiddalik the Frog’. Students will watch and engage with the performers while learning about Tiddalik. Using performance, music and storytelling techniques the children will become part of the story and explore the importance of sharing water and resources. This event is now on Compass. We ask all parents to please make the payment and give consent for their child to attend prior to Wednesday November 11th. Please see above for the dates that your child will attend.

Extended Family Holidays

While we understand the importance of connecting with families, we do ask parents to please organise any holidays during the term breaks. This will ensure that students maximise their learning opportunities by attending school every day. If you have a family holiday planned, please let your child’s teacher know as soon as possible. This will help teachers to plan accordingly to complete any assessments needed for report writing. Teachers will also be able to pack up students' books to send home (if they will not be at school in the last 2 weeks of term.)

Attendance

We are noticing that many students in Year 1 are having regular absences from school. There are obviously times when students should stay home from school. Some school approved reasons for students to be absent include illness or medical appointments. Where possible, students should be at school every day, so that they can prepare for Year 2 and continue to maintain strong friendships with their peers.

What we are Learning in Year 1

English

Our Mentor text last week was ‘Koala Bare’ by Jackie French. The book is about a cranky koala who is tired of being mistakenly called a bear. The students enjoyed reading this fun text and locating words that rhyme.

Throughout Term 4, students will take part in Free Writing Friday. This is something new and exciting for the students. Every week, students will be given a picture prompt to use to generate ideas and then use their imagination to write independently. In week 1, we spent the whole week introducing free writing. The lessons included:

- Understanding free writing and generating an idea from a picture

-Using describing words to make writing more interesting

- Developing an idea by introducing an event or problem

- Developing and sustaining an individual idea

Then on Friday, the students used a picture prompt to be creative and write independently. All students were very engaged and showed great creativity throughout these lessons.

Maths

In Maths, we have continued to review topics that we have covered this the year during our Maths Review. This ensures that students don’t forget their prior learning. Every day, students also take part in daily counting tasks. In Year 1, students need to count by 1s forwards and backwards to 120, starting from any number. Students are also required to skip count forwards by 10s, 5s and 2s to at least 50, however many students can count to 100! They are also learning to skip count backwards by 10s and 5s.

In Number, students are learning to partition two-digit numbers in different ways. They used Base-10 materials (MAB) and bundling sticks to show their working out. Students recorded the number and parts in a number bond.

Inquiry

In Term 4, our Inquiry unit is Earth in the Solar System. Last week, students investigated the planets and their relationship with the Sun and the Earth. Students learnt the names of the planets as well as comparing each planet to Earth, to see how they are the same and how they are different. They learnt that all planets in our solar system orbit the Sun. Students modelled this through a movement task, using labels and a Sun being represented in the middle. Students also enjoyed drawing the solar system and labelling the planets. We have many students who already know a lot about space and are eager to share their knowledge with their peers!

Grade 3

Grade 3 Newsletter

Literacy

In Literacy, our Grade 3 students have been enjoying reading The One and Only Ivan! Students have loved learning about the characters and exploring the story. We have also been developing our understanding of persuasive writing techniques and learning new vocabulary, including timid, convince and irrational. It has been wonderful to see students using these new words and building their confidence as writers!

Mathematics

In Mathematics, our Grade 3 students have been doing an amazing job exploring fractions! We have been learning about mixed fractions, improper fractions and representing fractions on number lines. Students have shown fantastic effort and enthusiasm as they develop their understanding of these concepts.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, we are excited to begin exploring the fascinating world of space! Students will be learning about the Sun and discovering more about our solar system. We can't wait to see their curiosity and excitement grow as we investigate the wonders of space!

Grade 4

Welcome Back to Term 4, Grade 4!

Welcome back to all our Grade 4 students and families! We hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing holiday and is feeling refreshed for our final term together. It has been wonderful to see students reconnect with their friends and settle back into classroom routines. We have an exciting term of learning ahead!

In English, we are exploring How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. This adventurous story is helping us develop our reading comprehension as we explore characters, make predictions and discuss key events. The world of Vikings and dragons also provides plenty of inspiration for imaginative writing!

In Mathematics, our focus is measurement, including mass and capacity. Students are learning to estimate, measure and compare using appropriate units and equipment. Through practical activities, we are exploring how measurement helps us solve everyday problems.

In Digital Technologies, students are constructing a marble run. This challenge encourages creativity, collaboration and problem-solving as students plan, build, test and improve their designs. We are encouraging them to persevere and use each test to work out what they could change.

In Inquiry, we are learning about forces, including how pushes and pulls affect the movement of objects. We are connecting this learning to our marble runs by exploring how forces influence the way a marble travels through a course.

Throughout the term, we will continue practising our school values of Respect, Resilience, Excellence and Togetherness, encouraging everyone to work hard, be kind and support one another.

Friendly Reminders

  • Hats: Students need to bring their school hat each day during Term 4 for outdoor play and activities. Please ensure hats are clearly labelled.
  • Gnarly Neighbours Skateboarding & Wellbeing Program: Our program is on Friday 16 October! Please ensure you have provided consent and completed any required forms on Compass so your child can participate.
  • Healthy lunchboxes: Please pack a variety of nutritious foods and enough food for your child to eat throughout the school day, including snacks and lunch. A refillable water bottle will also help students stay hydrated as the weather warms up.

We look forward to sharing a wonderful final term with our Grade 4 students and families!

Arrowsmith Music/Performing Arts

Arrowsmith Performing Arts

Foundation and grade 1 students have been learning to use expressive tools in their acting by learning about how different colours can match emotions and then showing each other what that emotion looks like through facial expressions. They explored feelings of happy, sad, angry, scared, confused and more. The next few weeks will see the students learning to use their body and voice to express feelings and ideas.

Ambrosia Music/Performing Arts

In Performing Arts at Ambrosia students in 6 have been discussing and selecting their graduation performance songs. Students in Grades 4 and Grade 5 have started to learn about story-telling by investigating First Nations Dreamtime stories and creating their own stories about the animals and land in their life. Grade 2 and Grade 3 have been introduced to learning about how a green screen works. They have learnt about how we can transform and transport performances by using images from around the world, outer space and nature. Here are some Grade 3 students in action learning about creating interesting characters and freeze frames set within different locations and places.

The base in cavity is cave, which means hollow. This helps explain why cavity is spelled the way it is. The base word cave ends in the letter <e> , but the <e> is dropped when the suffix -ity is added. This is because -ity begins with a vowel (i). Therefore, cave + ity → cavity
