Term 4 - Week 5

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

We are certainly moving quickly through Term 4, with only six weeks remaining in the school year! I hope everyone enjoyed the Melbourne Cup public holiday and, for those lucky enough, an extra-long weekend. As we head towards the end of the year, there is still plenty of learning, exciting activities and celebrations to look forward to across both campuses.

End of Semester Reports

On Monday, our teachers spent time reviewing and analysing student learning data and beginning the process of preparing end-of-year reports. These reports provide families with an overview of their child's learning progress, achievements and areas for continued growth throughout Semester 2. All student reports will be available for families to access via Compass during the final week of Term 4.

Grade 6 Bike Education Ride

Today, our Grade 6 students participated in their Bike Education ride around Beveridge, putting their cycling skills and road safety knowledge into practice. It was wonderful to have members of Victoria Police join us to support this experience and reinforce the importance of staying safe on our roads.

Well done to our Grade 6 students for demonstrating responsibility and road safety awareness throughout the ride!

Foundation 2027 Transition

Tomorrow marks an exciting milestone as we welcome our 2027 Foundation students and their families to BPS for their first transition session at our Arrowsmith Campus. Our newest students will have the opportunity to explore their future learning environment, meet some of our wonderful staff and begin building friendships. We will also be holding a parent information session to help families prepare for the exciting journey of starting school.

Student Placement – 2027

Planning for the 2027 school year is well underway, and our staff are currently working through the important process of developing class structures and student placements.

To assist us with this planning, we kindly ask that families notify the school as soon as possible if their child will NOT be returning to BPS in 2027.

Having accurate enrolment information is essential to ensuring we can plan effectively for staffing, class sizes and the learning needs of our students.

Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation as we prepare for another exciting year at Beveridge Primary School.

Take care,

Christine Cole
Principal

Coles Colouring Competition Winners

Congratulations to Graedy (1C) and Ira (4C), the winners of our Coles Colouring Competition! Their creative and colourful entries impressed the judges and earned them the winning prizes.

A big well done to all students who took part. We loved seeing the effort, creativity and enthusiasm shown in every entry.

Prize vouchers will be presented to Graedy and Ira at assemblies on Monday. Congratulations again to our winners, and thank you to everyone who participated and made the competition such a success!

A better Compass app is on its way

From early November, the Compass app will receive its biggest upgrade yet, shaped by feedback from parents, students and staff.

Do I need to do anything? No. The upgrade arrives as a normal app update, so there’s nothing new to download. If your app doesn’t update automatically, update it from the App Store or Google Play.
You may be asked to sign in again with your usual Compass details.

What’s new? An improved absence form, easier conference bookings, widgets for your phone’s home and lock screen, light and dark modes, and Apple Pay on iPhone for some payments. Students will also find timetable and feed widgets handy.

Where can I get help? Visit the parent guide at compass.education/guide

Kindness Counts: Small Acts, Big Impact

At Beveridge Primary School, we encourage our students to practise kindness every day. A friendly greeting, inviting someone to join a game or helping a classmate can make a big difference to someone’s day.

Kindness helps children build friendships, develop empathy and feel connected to their school community. Being treated kindly helps us feel valued and included, while showing kindness to others can bring a sense of pride and purpose.

Being kind also means listening, respecting personal space and understanding that others may have different feelings or needs. It does not mean always agreeing, children can be kind while setting boundaries and asking for help.

Families can encourage kindness at home by:

  • Noticing kind actions: “You noticed your sister needed help. That was thoughtful.”
  • Asking, “How did you show kindness today?”
  • Talking about how others might feel.
  • Modelling kind words and actions, especially when things are difficult.

This week’s kindness challenge: Encourage your child to choose one small act of kindness each day. Together, our small actions help make our school a welcoming place where everyone belongs.

Foundation Team 2

English:
This week, we have continued our learning about digraphs, exploring how two letters can work together to make one sound. Our focus digraph was ck. We also began learning about nouns and verbs, identifying them in books and practising using them in our own sentences.

Maths:
We have been exploring duration, learning to identify whether events take a long or short time and comparing more than two events using language such as shortest, longest, longer and shorter. We have also been learning about groups of, identifying how many groups of 2 and 3 there are and making our own groups of 2 and 3 using hands-on materials.

Inquiry:
We have been learning how to group animals and plants based on their features. For example, we have been sorting animals into groups with feathers and without feathers, and plants into groups with flowers and without flowers.

Wellbeing:
We are continuing our discussions about gender norms and challenging stereotypes about what boys and girls can like, do and enjoy. This week, our focus has been on the idea that everyone can be both strong and gentle. This led to discussions about the importance of knowing when to be strong and when to be gentle so that we can keep ourselves and others safe.

Grade 4

Dear Grade 4 families,

Our Grade 4 students returned full of beans, ready to learn and excited for Term 4! It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they settled back into classroom routines and embraced new learning opportunities. The past few weeks have been filled with creativity, teamwork and plenty of hands-on learning.

English

In English, students have been continuing our How to Train Your Dragon novel study. Through reading and discussion, they have been developing their comprehension skills, exploring characters and their actions, and using evidence from the text to explain their thinking. Fluency practice and writing activities have also supported students to read with expression and expand their sentences with detail.

Mathematics

Having explored measurement, including mass and capacity, students have now moved on to money. They are building their understanding of money in everyday situations, including calculating costs and working out change. Students are encouraged to explain their strategies and check that their answers are reasonable.

Inquiry and Design Technologies

In Inquiry, students have been learning about forces and exploring how pushes and pulls affect the movement of objects. In DesignTechnologies, they have been constructing marble runs, using their creativity and problem-solving skills to plan, build, test and improve their designs.

English BEEP Group

Our English BEEP group has been reading Wonder and exploring its themes of kindness, friendship and acceptance. Students have also been creating stop-motion animations, bringing their ideas to life through planning, storytelling and photography. This has provided an opportunity to combine their literacy skills with creativity and technology.

Mathematics BEEP Group

Our Mathematics BEEP group has been designing and building their very own theme parks! This project has given students an opportunity to apply their mathematical thinking, solve problems and make decisions as they developed their designs. It has been exciting to see their ideas take shape.

Gnarly Neighbours Program

Our Grade 4 students have also been participating in the Gnarly Neighbours Skateboarding and Wellbeing Program. They have been learning how to ride a skateboard, developing their balance and coordination, and learning about road safety and safe riding practices. These sessions have provided opportunities to demonstrate resilience, encourage others and build confidence when trying something new.

Students have also explored their artistic side by creating their own graffiti-inspired street art on canvases. This has been a wonderful opportunity to express their individuality through colour and design.

Reminders

  • Please ensure students bring a named sun-safe hat each day for outdoor play and activities.
  • Students should bring a refillable water bottle and enough food to keep them fuelled throughout the school day.

Thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to sharing more of our learning as the term continues!

The Grade 4 Team
Work hard, be kind.

Arrowsmith Music/Performing Arts

Foundation and grade 1 students have been continuing to explore different ways to show expressions and have now moved into learning about using their voice to create sound effects and voice overs for short films, such as creating footsteps, vocal expressions, tapping noises and scenic sounds (ocean waves, breeze, etc).
