Learning:

In Term 2, Grade 6 students are focusing on the following:

• English - This term, Grade 6 students will explore both poetry and persuasive writing. We will begin with a poetry unit based on Fire and Cyclone by Jackie French, where students will analyse language features such as alliteration, imagery and personification, and create their own poems. Students will then study The Last Bear by Hannah Gold as a mentor text for persuasive writing. They will develop their ability to form strong arguments, use persuasive language, and structure their writing effectively. 
• Mathematics - Students will build on their understanding across a range of mathematical concepts. They will develop skills in the addition and subtraction of fractions, and strengthen their multiplication and division strategies. Students will also explore number properties and apply these when solving problems. In measurement and space, they will investigate area, volume and angles, as well as transformations and translations of shapes. Students will also engage with statistics and probability, collecting, representing and interpreting data. In addition, they will apply their knowledge of money to solve real-world financial problems.
• Inquiry - In Economics and Business, students will explore financial decision-making and the role of consumers and businesses. In Science, students will investigate Biological Sciences, focusing on how living things have evolved and adapted to survive in their environments. They will also explore Physical Sciences, with a focus on light and how it can be manipulated.

Home Learning:

Homework may include a variety of activities designed to support and extend classroom learning. These may consist of:

• Borrowing books from the library on a weekly basis (students must bring a library bag)
• Daily reading to, with, or independently for parents/carers or older siblings
• Researching topics related to class learning
• Practising reading fluency
• Completing mathematics consolidation tasks
• Practising sports skills
• Practising and playing musical instruments
• Research projects or extension activities
• Using Literacy and Numeracy online applications to support learning (e.g. ebooks, audiobooks, Khan Academy)
• Finishing any incomplete classwork sent home
