Learning

In term 4, the grade 6 students are focusing on the following:

• English- In English we will be continuing our work with persuasive writing, this time our focus will be on speeches for debating. Following our persuasive unit we will be changing our focus to narratives and reading the text “the viewer”. To finish the year we will be revisiting our work on biographies and finding our own ‘notable’ to base a project on.
• Numeracy – This term in Mathematics, Grade 6 will focus on Order of Operations and the effective analysis of worded problems to prepare students with critical real-world problem-solving strategies. We will also revisit key measurement concepts, including converting units (length, mass, volume) and interpreting complex timetables. Students will then explore the geometry strand through a dedicated unit on 3D shapes, concentrating on their properties, nets, and visualising various cross-sections.
• Inquiry – Our inquiry topic this term will focus on Chemical Sciences, specifically how the properties of materials make them suitable for different uses. Students will actively engage with the scientific method by conducting a series of chemical experiments to observe changes and investigate material properties. This practical work will be documented by writing formal scientific reports and presenting evidence-based conclusions about the chemical properties they observed.

Home Learning

Homework may consist of:

• borrowing of books from the Library on a weekly basis (must have Library bag) 
• daily reading to, with, or by parents/carer or older siblings
• researching topics associated with set class work 
• practising reading fluency
• completing consolidation exercises for mathematics 
• practising sports skills
• practising and playing musical instruments 
• research project and extension activities
• Literacy/Numeracy online applications to support learning (ie. ebooks, audio books, Khan Academy)

Students are generally not expected to complete more than 30 - 45 minutes of homework per day.
