Effie Leisos - Foundation to Grade 2

Foundation
During this term in Physical Education, the students will work in teams and small groups to explore movement challenges and games designed to promote cooperation, problem-solving, and fair play.
They will focus on how to cooperate with others by sharing equipment, taking turns, and encouraging their teammates. Through a range of activities and obstacle courses, the students will be encouraged to use trial and error to find different ways to move, balance and complete challenges successfully.
During Health this term, the topic ‘Sun Smart’. The students will learn why they need to wear hats, sunscreen, protective clothing when outdoors, and understand how these choices help protect their skin.
Grade 1
During this term in Physical Education, the students will learn simple tennis skills such as holding the racket correctly, hitting the ball and working on hand-eye coordination. They will take part in fun activities and games that help them practise these skills.
Students will also explore the benefits of playing tennis, such as improving balance, coordination and teamwork. Through these lessons, they will build confidence, develop fitness and learn to enjoy being active with others.
In Health, the focus will be on ‘Road Safety’, encouraging basic knowledge and skills which promote personal safety while bike riding.
Grade 2
During this term in Physical Education, the students will learn a variety of tennis skills that focus on developing coordination, control and teamwork. They will practise basic skills such as holding the racket correctly, hitting the ball and moving into position.
The lessons will highlight the importance of working with a partner, helping students understand how communication, cooperation and encouragement make activities more enjoyable and successful.
In Health, the students will learn about ‘Road Safety. They will explore how to stay safe when riding a bike and learn simple rules and skills to ride within their communities.
Grade 3
In Term 4, students will engage in a target unit with a focus on learning the fundamentals of golf. Through sessions focused on chipping, putting and full-swing techniques, they develop coordination, control, and basic golf strategies. The unit will build towards students creating a mini-golf course and participating in match play. They will be encouraged to apply their skills in a fun and competitive setting. Students will explore concepts of safety and contribute to discussions around making positive, safe decisions in various settings. To end a great year of PE, students will revisit their throwing, catching and movement skills in a netball unit. They will build on their teamwork skills and be given the opportunity to display them in small sided games.
Grade 4
In Term 4, students will engage in flag football with a focus on throwing, catching and evasion skills. They will build their understanding of throwing and catching and be given opportunities to improve their skills, before applying them in small-sided games. Later in the term, students will participate in a target unit, with a focus on sports like lawn bowls and bocce. They will be introduced to a variety of concepts and strategies to allow both themselves and their teams to be successful. Students will focus on fundamental skills whilst improving their ability to display sportsmanship during competition with their peers.
Grade 5
During Term 4, students will participate in a soccer unit, focusing on passing, shooting, space and movement. They will build on their knowledge of strategies from invasion and evasion sports and apply them to soccer. Students will then demonstrate their skills in small-sided soccer games in preparation for their inter-school sports tournaments next year. To close out a fantastic year of PE, students will complete a striking and fielding unit with a focus on cricket. They will practice batting and bowling and apply their skills to modified games in preparation for competition during grade 6 interschool sports. In Health, students will continue to explore the importance of respect, empathy and equality in sport.
Grade 6
Students will build on their tennis skills, such as the forehand and backhand groundstrokes, volley, and serve. They will learn the concept of Read, React, Respond & Recover, applying them with a variety of similar sports participating in competitive rallies. The introduction of Bike Ed in 2025 focuses on equipping students with the practical skills, safety knowledge, and decision-making strategies needed to ride a bike confidently and responsibly in real-world environments. Through progressive, hands-on lessons—culminating in supervised group rides outside the school—students learn to check and maintain equipment, follow road rules, communicate effectively with other road users, identify and respond to hazards, and plan safe travel routes. The program promotes independence, physical activity, and active transport while fostering teamwork, inclusion, and lifelong safe riding habits.
