Grade 1
This term in Physical Education, Grade 1 students will focus on developing balance, coordination, strength, and body control through a variety of movement and gymnastics activities.
Students will explore different ways to balance their bodies using their feet, legs, and core - both on the ground and on equipment. These activities are designed to improve not only physical strength and coordination but also focus and body awareness.
Alongside balancing, students will be introduced to basic gymnastics movements using a gym mat. Grade 3
During term 3, students will engage in a unit exploring a range of Paralympic sports—including sitting volleyball, goalball, and blind soccer—learning about the values of courage, determination, and inclusivity that define both the Paralympic and Olympic Games. Activities based on the different sports will help students develop physical abilities, empathy, and an appreciation for adaptability in sports. To close out the term students will develop foundational tennis skills, such as the forehand and backhand groundstrokes, volley, and serve. They will gradually build toward understanding and participating in competitive rallies, applying their skills in a supportive environment that emphasises respect and sportsmanship.
Grade 4
In Term 3, students will engage in a rugby unit with a focus on throwing, catching and evasion skills. They will build their understanding of throwing and catching and be given opportunities to improve their skills, before applying them in small-sided games. Later in the term, students will participate in a volleyball unit. They will be introduced to a variety of concepts and strategies to allow both themselves and their teams to be successful. Students will focus on the fundamental skills of volleyball, learning to dig, set, spike and serve. They will then apply these skills, along with their knowledge of space and movement, to modified volleyball games.
Grade 5
During Term 3, students will participate in a netball unit, focusing on throwing catching, space and movement. They will build on their knowledge of strategies from invasion and evasion sports and apply them to netball. Students will then demonstrate their skills in small-sided netball games in preparation for their inter-school sports tournaments next year. Later in Term 3, students will complete a striking and fielding unit. They will become comfortable throwing and catching whilst wearing a mitt, in order to play softball and tee ball. Students will practice the skills and apply them to both sports in preparation for competition during grade 6. In Health, students will explore the importance of respect, empathy and equality in sport.
Grade 6
Students will build on their tennis skills, such as the forehand and backhand groundstrokes, volley, and serve. They will learn the concept of Read, React, Respond & Recover, applying them with a variety of similar sports participating in competitive rallies. The introduction of Bike Ed in 2025 focuses on equipping students with the practical skills, safety knowledge, and decision-making strategies needed to ride a bike confidently and responsibly in real-world environments. Through progressive, hands-on lessons—culminating in supervised group rides outside the school—students learn to check and maintain equipment, follow road rules, communicate effectively with other road users, identify and respond to hazards, and plan safe travel routes. The program promotes independence, physical activity, and active transport while fostering teamwork, inclusion, and lifelong safe riding habits.
