FOUNDATION
During Term One, students in Foundation will be introduced to Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and explore how people communicate using their hands, faces and bodies. Students will learn basic everyday signs, including greetings and classroom signs, as well as colour signs.
Learning will be supported through songs, games and interactive activities to build confidence and enjoyment. By the end of the term, students will be able to recognise and use a small range of simple Auslan signs and understand that Auslan is a language used by the Deaf community in Australia.
GRADE ONE
During Term One, the Grade One students will revise their understanding of Auslan as a visual language used by the Deaf community in Australia. Students will be introduced to basic aspects of Deaf culture.
They will learn and practise signs related to emotions, as well as classroom items and classroom instructions, using Auslan in familiar classroom contexts. Through interactive activities, games and structured practice, students will develop confidence in signing and responding to simple instructions.
GRADE TWO
During Term One, the Grade Two students will revise their understanding of Auslan as a visual language and explore basic Deaf culture, including respectful and effective visual communication. Students will learn and practise Auslan signs related to the Winter Olympics, as well as classroom items and instructions, using signing in familiar and engaging contexts.
The term will finish with learning connected to Harmony Day, celebrating inclusion, diversity and communication across cultures.
GRADE THREE
During Auslan in Term One, Grade Three students will participate in a variety of learning experiences to expand their Auslan vocabulary on the topics of Sport and the Weather. They will learn to sign, interpret and translate between English and Auslan through conversation, games, videos and songs. Grade Three students will build their confidence in expressing likes, dislikes and preferences, as well as reporting on the weather. They will begin to develop skills around recounting class and individual experiences using Auslan.
GRADE FOUR
During Auslan in Term One, Grade Four students will participate in a variety of learning experiences to expand their Auslan vocabulary for everyday routines and actions. They will learn to sign, interpret and translate between English and Auslan through conversation, games, videos, songs and role play. Grade Four students will build their confidence in recounting experiences and routines, including meals and daily school activities. They will continue to develop skills around structuring and using sentences in Auslan.
GRADE FIVE
During Auslan in Term One, Grade Five students will participate in a variety of learning experiences to expand their Auslan vocabulary for everyday use on the topics of shopping and food. They will learn to sign, interpret and translate between English and Auslan through conversation, games, videos and songs. Grade Five students will build their confidence in using Auslan outside of the school environment using role play and will expand their understanding of the experiences of Deaf people in our community in the same way. They will continue to solidify their skills in using Auslan to communicate with their classmates and teachers.
