Dear Families,
It has been another fantastic week of learning across both campuses, with students continuing to engage in a range of exciting learning opportunities.
Grade 6 Swimming Program
This week, our Grade 6 students commenced their swimming program at Merrifield. Over the next three weeks, students will participate in multiple swimming lessons designed to further develop their swimming skills and water safety knowledge. These sessions provide valuable opportunities for students to build confidence in and around the water while learning important lifelong safety skills.
Grade 1 Phonics Check
Throughout this term, our Grade 1 students will complete the Department of Education's Phonics Check. This one-on-one assessment provides teachers with valuable information about each student's decoding skills and reading development, helping us to celebrate progress and identify any additional support that may be required.
Curriculum Day – Friday 14th August
A reminder that next Friday is our Term 3 Curriculum Day, and students are not required to attend school. Staff will participate in a full day of professional learning with a focus on the effective use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) 2.0, and strengthening explicit instruction practices in English and Mathematics. These learning opportunities continue to build staff capability and ensure we provide the highest quality teaching for all students.
Book Week 2026 – Symphony of Stories
We are looking forward to celebrating Book Week in Week 7 with this year's theme, "Symphony of Stories", celebrating how voices, books and imagination come together like an orchestra. Our whole-school Book Week celebration will be held on Friday 28 August at the Ambrosia Campus. Families are invited to join us for our annual Book Week Parade in the morning before students participate in a range of engaging literacy activities throughout the day. We look forward to seeing our students' wonderful book character costumes and sharing this special celebration with our community.
Thank you for your continued support, and I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead.

Grade 1 Newsletter Week 4 Term 3
English
In Year One, our Writing focus has been on developing an understanding of information texts. The students are enjoying learning facts about a range of animals while exploring the non-fiction text features, such as contents page, headings, glossary and labels. The students created their own definition cards using ‘expert’ words.
Maths
In Maths, the Year 1 students have been using geoboards to make and describe the features of 2D shapes. In Number, students have compared collections of materials to understand the difference. For example, ‘The difference between 6 and 4 is 2.’ Students have solved number stories by either adding more or taking away.
Wellbeing
During our 4Rs lessons, students have been thinking what stress means and learning ways to cope with stress at school and at home. We have been exploring a range of strategies to manage stressful situations.
You may like to try these relaxation techniques at home.
Grateful to be in Grade 2 with you!
English
The Grade 2 cohort have started reading their new chapter book which is called “Fantastic Mr Fox” within the classroom.
We have started looking at the different characters and the character traits of each famer. The students have had a few laughs as well as feeling grossed out by each farmer and their lifestyle and food choices.
Maths
In Maths students have had a lot of fun measuring and comparing the capacity of different containers using informal units of measurement. Students have also learnt how to solve division problems using the following strategy from the Explicit Maths Program.
What is coming up!
Next Thursday on the 13th of August the Grade 2 students will be participating in the Maths Incursion called “World of Maths”. During this excursion students will be able to participate in hands on learning activities where they can apply their problem-solving skills.
Friendly reminder: Please check Compass to ensure you have paid and given consent for your child to attend.

Swimming
Our Grade 6 students made a fantastic start to their Swimming and Water Safety Program this week at Paul Sadler Swimland, Mickleham. Students showed great enthusiasm as they began developing important swimming techniques and water safety skills in a fun and supportive environment.
The fully subsidised program will run across eight sessions throughout August, giving students the opportunity to build their confidence, improve their swimming ability, and strengthen essential life skills in and around the water.
We look forward to seeing the progress our students make over the coming weeks!
English
Grade 6 students have continued exploring the mentor text Us Mob Wallawurru, developing their comprehension and note-taking skills as they identify and record key information. Students have also been strengthening their writing by learning how to use the coordinating conjunctions because, but, and so to create more detailed and connected sentences. These skills will support students in becoming more confident readers and writers.
Mathematics
Over the past few weeks, our Grade 6 students have been developing their understanding of percentages through a range of real-world problem-solving activities. Students have learnt how to calculate percentage discounts that are multiples of 10, use multiplication and division to determine decimals and percentages of amounts, and select efficient strategies when working with fractions, decimals and percentages.
Students have also explored data investigation by interpreting line graphs and creating and comparing side-by-side column graphs. These activities have strengthened their ability to analyse, represent and communicate data, while building valuable mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
This term, our Grade 6 students have begun their Geography unit, The People and Places of Asia. Throughout the unit, students investigated the diverse countries, cultures and environments that make Asia such a unique continent. They developed their geographical skills by locating countries and significant landforms, interpreting maps, and exploring how geography influences the way people live. Students also compared everyday life in Australia with countries across Asia, examined Australia's connections with the region through trade, tourism and culture, and completed an independent research project on an Asian country of their choice. We look forward to seeing students broaden their global understanding and develop a greater appreciation of the rich diversity found across our neighbouring continent.

Year 6 STEM
This term, our Year 6 students have combined creativity, technology and sustainability in STEM. Using recycled materials, students designed and built their own unique video game controllers before bringing them to life with Makey Makeys. They explored the design process by planning, testing and refining their ideas while developing their problem solving and engineering skills.
Alongside this exciting project, students investigated the environmental impact of plastic waste and explored practical ways to live more sustainably. They examined how plastics affect ecosystems and discussed simple actions we can all take to reduce our environmental footprint, such as reducing single use plastics, reusing materials and recycling responsibly.

Answers to last week’s puzzle:
Deforestation
There are about 450 words that you can make with the letters from deforestation!

English words do not usually end in the letters j, u, or v. When a word would otherwise end in one of these letters, an <e> is often added to make the spelling look complete.
Examples:
have
give
love
blue
value
Smart Sugars: Understanding Sugar in Kids' Diets
Not all sugars are the same. Natural sugars found in fruit, vegetables and milk come with important nutrients, while added sugars in foods like soft drinks, lollies, cakes and many packaged snacks should be limited.
Too much added sugar can contribute to tooth decay, energy crashes and poor eating habits. Rather than avoiding sugar completely, aim to choose nutritious foods most of the time and keep sugary treats for special occasions.
Simple ways to reduce added sugar:
Healthy eating is about balance, not perfection. Small, consistent changes can help children build lifelong healthy habits.
Family Challenge
This week, see if your family can:
✅ Swap one sugary drink for water each day.
✅ Add one extra piece of fruit to lunchboxes.
✅ Read the nutrition label on one packaged food together.
Small changes made consistently can have a big impact on children's health and wellbeing.

Our whole school production of Beveridge Beats 109.9FM: The Homegrown Hour is taking place during the last week of Term Three on Wednesday 16th September. We will have three performances – 10am, 1pm and 6pm. All three performances will be the same and all students are performing in all three shows. Ticket information will be sent out during Term Three.
All students from Foundation through to Year Six are taking part in the production. We kindly ask that families provide costumes for students specific to the song's genre and era. Please see information below so that you and your child/ren can begin to find items over the holidays to help build a costume. If you require further clarification, please contact the office and we will forward your query to the relevant person who will contact you.
Please see the following link with the list of costume requirements for each grade.
