The students will be engaged in learning experiences in the following areas:
Reading:
~ Reading with greater independence
~ Improve reading stamina
~ Establishing reading routines in the classroom
~ Understand the purpose of texts
~ Exploring narratives in terms of their structure such as problems and solutions
~ Use a range of strategies to work out unknown words (meaning cues, chunking, rereading, read on)
~ Investigating long vowel sounds such as /ae/ and /ee/ to help them spell words with the same sound but different spellings.
~ Make connections between texts read and ourselves, other texts and what we know about the world
Writing:
~ Correct structure and letter
formation in handwriting
~ Expectations for writing, including writing on the lines, leaving spaces between words, errors, neatness, where to start on the page
~ Structure of a narrative, including beginning, middle and end, problem and solution.
~ Compose our ideas when writing
~ Follow the writing process to plan, draft, revise, edit and publish narratives.
Speaking and Listening:
~ Understand that spoken language is used in combination with other means of communication
~ Listen to, recite and perform poems, chants, rhymes and songs, imitate and invent sound patterns including alliteration and rhyme
~ Listen for specific purposes and information, including instructions, and extend students’ own and others' ideas in discussions through initiating topics, making positive statements, and voicing disagreement in an appropriate manner
The students may be engaged in learning experiences in the following areas:
Number:
~ Recognise, represent and order numbers to at least 1000 using physical and virtual materials such as MAB blocks and number lines
~ Partition, rearrange, regroup and rename two- and three-digit numbers into their place value parts such as hundreds, tens and ones.
~ Develop confidence with number sequences to and from 120 by ones from any starting point
~ Skip count by twos, fives and tens starting from zero, including using 5c and 10c coins
~ Investigate number patterns formed by skip counting
~ Connect number names,
numerals and quantities, including zero, initially up to 10 and then beyond
~ Recognise, model, read, write and order numbers to at least 1000. Locate these numbers on a number line
Measurement and Geometry:
~ Identify the date and determine the numbers of days between events using calendars e.g. today is, tomorrow will be
~ Gathering and posing questions to collect data on a range of topics
~ Using data representations display data
~ Interpreting different graphs to compare data
~ Measure and compare objects based on length using information units of measurement such as unifix blocks and paper clips.
~ Using words such as longer and shorter to justify measurements.
Home readers:
Students will change take home readers daily and bring home one reader per night.
Students are required to read daily, complete the reading diary and return the book the next day. Please sign the reading diary nightly.
Maths Seeds and Reading Eggs:
Students should regularly complete tasks on these programs. They are accessible on computers and iPads. Students will get a username and password to access task and activities. Please contact your child’s teacher if you do not have these yet.
